Chris Morin, Technical Director, 746th Test Squadron, US Air Force Chris Morin reveals that GPS jamming is now so common the military must test the performance of all their systems in "jammed environments". He explains why civilian systems are extremely vulnerable and shows the potential destructive coverage of a tiny GPS jammer his squadron built into a cigarette package. Finally, he shows how Locata technology is being incorporated at the heart of the USAF's next generation test system as a world-first "backup to GPS".
Paul Harcombe, Chief Surveyor, Land & Property Information Division, NSW Govt. Paul Harcombe describes the rollout of the Sydney Satellites Project - the deployment of the world's first LocataNet test bed around Sydney Harbour. Paul lists the project's federal, state and local stakeholders and their keenness to trial Locata as a critical backup to GPS in urban environments. He also presents the superb positioning results Locata delivered on Sydney Harbour and describes the next steps for a LocataNet in and around Sydney's CBD for future seamless indoor/outdoor urban positioning applications.
Prof. Chris Rizos, Head, School of Surveying and Geospatial Engineering, University of NSW Prof. Chris Rizos provides an overview of the current and future prospects for satellite-based positioning systems and points out the growing civilian vulnerabilities to loss of GPS signals. He describes what is required for modernisation of the system and why Locata must now be factored into any analysis of a viable alternative to GPS.
